Income Timing & Liquidity Notice:European employers typically pay wages on the 25th to the last working day of the month for that month’s work. Depending on your start date and local bank account setup (which often requires obtaining your local tax number first), you may need 4 to 8 weeks of liquid capital before receiving your first payroll deposit.

Budget Formulas & Financial Definitions

Formula 1: Monthly Net Cash Flow

Monthly Remainder = Monthly Take-Home Pay − Recurring Expenses

Positive result indicates discretionary savings; negative indicates monthly debt accumulation.

Formula 2: Upfront Capital Requirement

Initial Cash Needed = One-Off Moving Costs + (Recurring Expenses × Buffer Months)

Covers flights, visas, furniture, and rental security deposits plus initial living runway.

Why Refundable Deposits Are Not Recurring Costs

A common mistake in relocation planning is confusing rental deposits with regular rent. A 2-to-3-month security deposit (Mietkaution / Vuokratakuu) is an upfront liquidity lock. While technically refundable when you move out, that cash is completely inaccessible during your tenancy and must be paid in full before you receive keys.

Income Timing & Local Bank Account Setup

In almost all European countries, you cannot be paid via local payroll until you have:

  1. Registered your local residential address with the municipality (DVV, Bürgeramt, Gemeente, etc.).
  2. Received your official personal tax identity number.
  3. Opened a local European SEPA bank account with strong electronic ID.

This bureaucratic pipeline frequently requires 3 to 6 weeks. Having 2–3 months of cash buffer protects against emergency cash shortages while waiting for your first salary cycle.
